Requesting Content Rights from Social Listening
Last updated: August 27, 2026
This feature is currently rolling out to select brands.
When a creator mentions your brand or posts about it with your hashtags, you can request permission to use that content in paid media without leaving Social Listening. This turns organic content (UGC) into assets you're licensed to run as ads.
1. Find the post and check its status
In the Social Listening / UGC library, each eligible Instagram post — both tagged mentions and hashtag posts — shows its current rights status:
- No request yet — you can start a request.
- Pending — a request has been sent and is awaiting the creator's response.
- Accepted — rights were granted; the card shows the usage-period badge.
- Rejected — the creator declined.
You can start a request from the media card or from the post's preview using the Request content rights action. Only one live request is allowed per post at a time.
2. Complete the request composer
The Request content rights action opens a guided composer with three steps:
- Content rights terms — choose Unlimited (no time restrictions) or Custom (set a duration in days, or a specific start and end date). You can't continue until the terms are valid.
- Message setup — choose how to reach the creator: Email or Instagram Direct Message (DM is offered only when it's available for that creator). Write the subject and message body, insert variables to personalize it, and format the text as needed. The creator's email is prefilled when we can resolve it.
- Choose collection — pick an existing media-library collection or create a new one inline. Once rights are granted, the media lands in this collection.
For eligible creators who aren't yet partners, you may also see an optional Partnership Ads invite before sending — you can choose to request content only, or invite the creator and request content together.
3. The creator responds
After you send, the creator receives the request by email or Instagram DM and responds on a branded, secure page showing your brand, the content, and the request terms (they can also respond via DM). They can approve or deny the request. The first response wins, and once answered the request can't be changed.
4. Status updates automatically
The post's status in Social Listening updates to reflect the response — accepted (with its usage-period badge), rejected, or still pending. Accepted content is added to your chosen collection and is ready to manage and use like any other rights-managed media.
Note: this request flow supports Instagram tagged mentions and hashtag posts. Carousel posts aren't supported yet — the request action is hidden on carousels.
